The word 'gerrymander' dates back to 1812 when the Governor of Massachusetts, Elbridge Gerry, signed into law a redistricting
proposal filled with contorted districts to steal seats from the opposing political party. The Boston Gazette reprinted one particularly
egregious district (left) and decided to enhance its salamander-like characteristics and, voila!, the gerrymander was born!
In keeping with the long political tradition of drawing charicatures of exceptional districts, Common Cause is pleased to present the
artwork of students at Thomas R. Pollicita Middle School in Daly City, inspired by real California districts. Click on your favorite district to see a larger version!
